PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder capable of estimating a cause of a bar code reading error, displaying the contents on a display panel, and warning a user, and an image reading device using the feeder. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder comprises a sheet holder for holding many sheets having a bar code, a suction cup holding member having a plurality of suction cups for sucking the sheets, a suction cup driving means for relatively moving the suction cup holding member to the sheet holder, a mirror mounted to the suction cup holding member, and a laser bar code reader for reading the bar code via the mirror. The reading position of the laser bar code reader can be varied. The sheet feeder has a scan light intensity detecting means for detecting the intensity of the scan light emitted from the the laser bar code reader, and the scan light intensity detecting means estimates the cause when the laser bar code reader causes a bar code reading error.
