The ballast includes a high frequency power supply (HF) which supplies a choke (La). An operating voltage (VL) for the illumination device is generated by using a low-pass filter (La, CL) to convert the high-frequency voltage to an alternating voltage of lower frequency. An independent claim is included for a method of operating an illumination device.
