PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starter capable of performing silent start for dispensing with complicated electric control without preventing miniaturization of an engine and speedy start without increasing energy consumption. SOLUTION: In this engine starter for rotating a crank shaft by meshing an idle gear 17 driven by a pinion 16 of a starter motor with a ring gear 5 of the crank shaft, the idle gear 17 is movably provided in radial directions b, c of the ring gear 5 for the ring gear 5, and the idle gear 17 is moved in the radial direction b from the outside of the ring gear 5 to mesh it with the ring gear 5 by an actuator. Consequently, probability of collision of teeth is reduced when compared with a conventional case where the pinion is moved in the axial direction to mesh it with the ring gear, and shock of collision is reduced, thereby solving a problem of collision sound.
