PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cationic surfactant which has high biodegradability, low irritativeness to the skins and the mucous membranes, and excellent hydrolysis stability. SOLUTION: This cationic surfactant represented by the general formula (1), and the method for producing the same. Therein, R<SP>1</SP>is a 1 to 22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, cyclohexyl or (A-O)<SB>n</SB>-Y; R<SP>2</SP>is a 1 to 22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or (A-O)<SB>n</SB>-Y; R<SP>3</SP>is (A-O)<SB>n</SB>-CO<SB>2</SB>-R<SP>5</SP>; R<SP>4</SP>is H, a 1 to 4C alkyl or benzyl; A is a 2 to 4C alkylene; Y is H or CO<SB>2</SB>-R<SP>5</SP>; X is an anionic atom or an anionic group; R<SP>5</SP>is a 1 to 22C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; (n) is an integer of 1 to 5.
