Fail-safe control device for a combustion engine has a number of mechanisms (112, 201) for setting different operating properties of an inlet valve (105) and a control unit (114) for controlling the control mechanisms. The control unit detects whether one of the number of valve property setting mechanisms has failed and if so sets a limiting valve for the property normally set by the failed mechanism. The operating properties of the valve are then set using the limit value and other adjustable operating properties set using the other mechanisms. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a further fail-safe control device and; (b) a fail-safe control method for the inlet valve of a combustion engine.
