摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the transmission capacity with making full use of existing terminal apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In an optical transmission terminal 10, an additional transmission apparatus 24 is connected between an existing optical transmitter 20 and a dispersion-equalized fiber 22. In an optical reception terminal 14, an additional reception apparatus 54 is connected between an existing optical receiver 54b and a dispersion-equalized fiber 50. In the additional transmission apparatus 24, a polarization controller 26 controls the polarization of the output signal light Se of the existing optical transmitter 20 in an orthogonal direction of the polarization of the output signal light Sa of an additional optical transmitter 30. A polarization multiplexer 28 multiplexes the signal lights Sa, Se with mutually orthogonal polarizations. In the additional reception apparatus 54, a polarization controller 56 controls the polarization of input signals so that a polarization separator 58 can separate the output signal light of the optical transmitter 20 from that of the additional optical transmitter 30.
