<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate irregularity in luminance between fluorescent tubes in a direct backlight device. <P>SOLUTION: In the direct backlight device in which a reflection plate 24 is arranged below and approximately parallel to a diffusion plate 21 and fluorescent tubes are spaced at an appropriate interval between the diffusion plate 21 and the reflection plate 21, the cross sectional shape of the reflection plate 24 in the direction crossing the longitudinal direction of the fluorescent tubes 22 and 23 at a right angle is made zigzag having a pitch that is a half of the attaching pitch of the tubes 22 and 23, and top portions 24a to 24c, which are the apexes of the zigzag shape, are placed directly below the middle point of the tubes 22 and 23 and directly below the tubes 22 and 23, so that the amount of reflected light beams to the middle position of the tubes 22 and 23 is made greater and irregularity of luminance between the tubes 22 and 23 is eliminated.
