<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display wherein double-sided display is performed by using one liquid crystal display panel, an area occupied by the liquid crystal display is made small, images of both surfaces are displayed utilizing illumination light from a surface light source and external light, and either one screen surface of both surfaces is made to be a mirror surface. <P>SOLUTION: A TN type liquid crystal display panel 4 formed by providing reflection films 9 partially corresponding to the inner parts of a plurality of pixels D on a first substrate 5 on the side opposite to the surface light source 1 which emits illumination light from one surface thereof and transmits light made incident from the one surface and the other surface thereof is disposed on the illumination light emitting surface side of the surface light source 1 and a reflection/transmission panel having a liquid crystal layer 25 provided between a pair of substrates 19 and 20 and an absorption polarization element 26 disposed on the outer surfaces of the substrate 19 opposite to the surface light source 1 and a reflection polarization element 27 disposed on the outer surfaces of the substrate 20 on the surface light source 1 side, and capable of switching a reflection state where incident light transmitted through the absorption polarization element 26 from the side opposite to the surface light source 1 is reflected by the reflection polarization element 27 and a transmission state where incident light transmitted through the absorption polarization element 26 from the side opposite to the surface light source 1 and incident light transmitted through the reflection polarization element 27 from the surface light source 1 side are transmitted from and to each other by applying voltage is disposed on the other surface side of the surface light source 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
