PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image read apparatus capable of enhancing discrimination accuracy of the size of an original. SOLUTION: The image read apparatus samples output signals from a plurality of pixels of an image sensor to measure the optical density of a prescribed region on the panel face of an original platen and discriminates (S300) the size of the original placed on the panel face of the original platen on the basis of the measured optical density. The apparatus is further provided with a magnification measurement means for measuring the magnification of an optical system. An original size discrimination means changes (S100) the sampling object pixels of the image sensor in response to the result of the measurement by the magnification measurement means.
