1,273,920. Dyeing in organic solvents. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 14 Aug., 1970 [16 Aug., 1969], No. 39323/70. Heading D1B. [Also in Division C4] Synthetic fibre materials, e.g. polyesters, polyamides polyurethanes, polyolefins and cellulose acetates are solvent dyed by impregnation with anthraquinone dyes of the general formula: wherein X is -O- or -S- and R is a C 4 -C 18 alkyl radical or an alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl, aralkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl radical, the material then being subjected to a heat treatment e.g. a dry heat treatment at 120‹ to 230‹C or a heat treatment with a superheated solvent vapour at 100 to 150‹C. The material may be given an intermediate drying before the heat treatment. The solvents used are water-immiscible (b.p. 40-150‹C) e.g. tri- or tetrachlbroethylene and 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane and the dye may be added thereto in solution in a water-immiscible solvent e.g. an alcohol, dimethylformamide dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulphoxide or sulpholan. Red and bluish red shades are obtained.
