PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly set a high pressure mold clamping start position in the mold clamping process of the movable platen of a mold clamping device and to automatically perform this setting even during molding work. SOLUTION: This high pressure mold clamping start position setting device is equipped with an operation mode setting means 19 for performing the automatic and manual setting of the on-off operation of the movable platen 5, a drive means 15 for moving the movable platen 5, a rotary encoder (position detecting means) 7a detecting a moving position of the movable platen 5, a memory (memory means) 18 for storing the position data of the movable platen 5, an automatic setting switch (automatic setting command means) 22 for issuing a command so as to automatically set the high pressure mold clamping start position of the movable platen 5 and a CPU 17 for monitoring the moving speed after the start of low pressure mold protection of the movable platen 5 when a command is issued to automatically set the automatic setting switch 22, deciding the minimum value among the position data detected by a rotary encoder 7a within a definite time after the moving speed becomes zero and determining the high pressure mold clamping start position on the basis of the decision result to store the same in the memory 18.
