PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auxiliary light projecting device capable of changing the magnification of a pattern for focus detection in accordance with a photographic lens. SOLUTION: The auxiliary light projecting device A attached or incorporated in a camera or communicating with a camera has a decision means 13 for deciding the level of the luminance or the contrast of a subject, and projects the pattern for focus detection 20 to the subject based on the result of decision by the decision means 13 so that the pattern 20 reflected from the subject may be detected by the automatic focus detection means 9 of the camera A. A projection optical system projecting the pattern 20 changes the projection magnification of the pattern 20 to the subject based on information from a lens information obtaining means 21 obtaining the information from a photographic lens 1 attached to the camera.
