PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder capable of setting an offset value easily even when a scale unit and a slider unit are replaced independently. SOLUTION: In this linear encoder, a scale is attached to bring an absolute scale code for expressing an absolute address of a specified place in the scale unit into desultory values according to a predetermined rule, the absolute address is read out under the condition where the slider unit is moved to a proper range, and the offset value characteristics to the individual scale units are accurately specified thereby to be stored in the slider unit.
