PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To learn unevenness in correlation of sensor output of a lift amount sensor and actual valve lift amount without affecting drivability and causing oil running-out and battery consumption, in an engine provided with a variable valve sytem capable of changing valve lift amount. SOLUTION: Whether learning permit conditions are satisfied or not is determined after warming up the engine, during fuel cut, and when operation speed is in a predetermined rotation speed region (S1). When the learning permit conditions are satisfied, valve timing of an intake valve is forcedly made to lag (S2). Valve timing of the intake valve is controlled to the minimum value limited by a stopper in this condition (S3) to learn unevenness in correlation of sensor output and actual valve lift amount from output of the lift amount sensor at the time.
