<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem associated with necessity of preparing a plurality of dispersion compensating devices with mutually different characteristics in advance for the purpose of compensating wavelength dispersion caused by transmission routes of various lengths and various states because the amount of dispersion compensated with the dispersion compensating device is fixed in a dispersion compensator which compensates dispersion and dispersion slope in wavelength dispersion of WDM signal light. <P>SOLUTION: Wavelength conversion by degenerated four-wave mixing (DFWM) is carried out on a highly nonlinear fiber (20A) by making input signal light of the dispersion compensator (1A) to be probe light and excited light from LD (21A) to be pump light. The converted light is dispersion compensated with a dispersion compensation fiber (30A) with a wavelength dependent dispersion value, subsequently again wavelength converted by the degenerated four-wave mixing on a highly nonlinear fiber (20B) and outputted. As the wavelength of the output signal light is identical to that of the input signal light and the wavelength converted by the DFWM varies with exciting light wavelength, the dispersion compensator of which the dispersion compensation is varied by an excitating light wavelength is constructed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
