PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying a polymer substrate surface by applying a fluoromonomer to the surface without being accompanied by any change in characteristics of the polymer substrate itself in relating to the method for modifying the polymer substrate surface.

SOLUTION: The method for modifying the polymer substrate (e.g., a polyethylene) surface is to put the substrate in a supercritical fluid (e.g., CO2) containing the fluoromonomer [e.g., 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate] and a radical initiator and radically polymerize the fluoromonomer.
