PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive optical waveguide which can be packaged without using a fiber array and can be manufactured in a simple manner and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The optical waveguide is integrally formed with an incident section, a branch section and an exit section and is so constituted as to make the refractive index difference between the core section and the clad section in the branch section greater than the refractive index difference between the core sections and clad sections in the incident section and exit section. The method is provided with a process of forming a clad layer by applying a polymer on a substrate or film and irradiating the coating with UV rays, then baking the coating, a process of forming the clad sections and forming the core sections along the optical waveguide pattern by applying the polymer on the clad layer and irradiating the coating with the UV rays for a long time in such a manner that the refractive index of the branch section is made lower than the refractive index of the incident section and the exit section, a process of further forming the clad layer by applying the polymer on the optical waveguide pattern and irradiating the coating with the UV rays, then baking coating, and a process of cutting the formed optical waveguide.
