PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that need not determine whether an image of a document is a color image and as a result dispenses with a switching operation and a switch key for switching between a color mode and a monochromatic mode. SOLUTION: The image reader is equipped with an image read means of reading the image of the document placed on an original platen, a position detecting means of detecting the position of the document placed on the original platen, and a switching means of switching a color designation mode on the basis of the position of the document detected by the position detecting means.
