PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a process cartridge capable of protecting the surface of a body to be charged from chemical deterioration ascribable to AC application discharge in a system of charging the body to be charged by utilizing the above discharge by a charging member disposed in contact with or in close vicinity to the body. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus including a movable body 1 to be charged and a charger 2 including a charging member 2a disposed opposite to the body 1 and in contact with or in close vicinity to the body 1 to be charged and applying a voltage, including an AC component, to the charging member 2a for thereby charging the body 1, a protection substance 32 for protecting the surface of the body 1 from deterioration ascribable to discharge is caused to exist on the body 1, and the proportion [%] of the number of particular elements contained in the protection substance 32 and detected by XPS to the total number of all elements constituting the outermost surface of the body 1 and also detected by the XPS is made proper according to charging conditions, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
