Device for controlling combustion engine valve opening has a variable valve opening mechanism with which valve opening can be continuously varied, a sensor for measuring the degree of opening and a control unit that regulates valve opening based on a set value. The control unit learns a first reference opening value in a defined beginning time and a second reference opening value based on a new learning process. The two opening values are used to define an opening detection characteristic of the valve opening detection sensor. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a further valve-opening control device and; (b) a method for controlling valve opening of a combustion engine.
