The airbag module for motor vehicles has air suction holes (9) in the base of airbag container and means of intensifying the suction effect which is a surface element (11) radially installed between the gas generator (4) and wall (8) of the container. The upper contour of the surface element is curved in the direction of the flow normal of the gas outlet opening (5) so that the profiled nose (12) points towards the gas outlet opening. Propellant gas (6) flowing over the upper side of the surface element creates suction forces to draw air from outside the container which finds its way into the airbag via the respective openings (9,13) in the airbag container and surface element.
