Type-wheel machines; summation and aggregation type-selecting mechanism; power assisted type-selecting actions; type-head carriages.-A teleprinter is provided with a carriage 5 on which is mounted a type carrier 26, the type characters on which are selectively displaced into printing position by vanes 101 . . . 106 (Fig. 3) which are tilted into one of two end positions, in response to a telegraph code representative of the character to be printed, so as to enable a summation mechanism to rotate and/or raise the type carrier 26 into the selected printing position. Setting of vanes 101 . . .106 causes axial displacement of lugs 119, 120 on driven members 117 which are associated with driving members of halfrevolution clutches 111 . . . 116, whereby one or the other of the lugs 119, 120 are placed into the path of driving dogs 123 disposed on the driven members 117, which cause mutilated gears 118 to be engaged by gears 122 on the half-revolution clutches 111 . . . 116. Clutches are driven by a continuously rotating fluted shaft 13. Rotation of clutches 113, 112 jointly or selectively (Fig. 3) causes shafts 77, 78 to be rotated through 180 degrees whereby cranks 74, 76, Fig. 1, which are connected to levers 72, 73, cause an aggregate movement of a transverse lever 62 coacting with a rack 37 to displace the rack which in turn through a gear 36 causes rotation of a sleeve 33 which carries the type carrier cage 28 to place one of the four type drums 23 in the printing position. Rotation of clutches 114, 115, 116 (Fig. 3) jointly or selectively causes shafts 92, 94 and sleeve 99 to rock lever 81 which in a similar manner to lever 62 displaces a rack 43, which in turn through a gear 42 rotates a shaft 42 having a further 39 which meshes with gears 41 on the type drums 23 to displace the selected character on the selected drum 23 into the printing position. Rotation of clutch 111, Fig. 1, rotates the shaft 61 through 180 degrees, which in turn rocks the crank 59 to raise or lower the type carrier 26 to present one or the other of character columns at the printing position. Clutches 111 . . . 116 are rotated, selectively and simultaneously to select the character. Impression of the type carrier against platen 6 is effected by universal bar 133 co-operating with bellcrank 134 which engages driven member 137 with clutch 136 to rotate shaft 52 whereby complementary cams 51 rock a lever 48 (Fig. 2) to impact the type carrier 26 against the platen through a yoke 46. Type-wheel construction.-Type carrier 26 comprises a cage 28 having four symmetrically spaced shafts 24 on which are mounted respective type drums 23 one end of which terminates in a gear 41 which meshes with a gear 39 passing through the axis of rotation of cage 28 and meshing with all gears 41. |
