PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal panel which is free of a problem of display quality and whose response speed is improved. SOLUTION: For the method for driving the antiferroelectric liquid crystal panel having 3 stability hysteresis characteristic which has 1st, 2nd, and 3rd optical stable states depending upon an applied voltage and begins to shift from a 1st stable state to the 2nd stable state when a voltage higher than a positive voltage value V12 is applied and from the 1st stable state to the 3rd stable state when a voltage lower than a negative voltage value V13 is applied, a means of applying a positive voltage Vre and a negative voltage -Vre the absolute value of which are smaller than the voltage values V12 and V13 to liquid crystal is provided to apply the positive voltage +Vre or negative -Vre to the liquid crystal in the sustaining period of the 1st stable state.
