<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable length coding device in which decoding can be made forwards and backwards. <P>SOLUTION: The device has: a higher-order hierarchy variable length coder 902 for coding, with a variable length, information contained in the coded data of a motion picture except for a DCT coefficient after quantization; a lower- order hierarchy variable length coder 904 for coding, with a variable length, the DCT coefficient after quantization contained in the coded data of the motion picture as a code word capable of forward and backward decoding; and a multiplexing part 905 for multiplexing and outputting the variable length coded data by arranging the variable length coded data obtained with the higher-order hierarchy variable length coder 902 in a higher-order hierarchy and the variable length coded data obtained by the lower-order hierarchy variable length coder 904 in a low-order hierarchy. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
