An electric motor (19) driven by three-phase electric power includes armature windings (53a - 53i) that are connected in series, via an armature-winding connecting line (63), for each of a plurality of groups of three or N circumferentially-adjoining poles to thereby provide three-phase armature windings, wherein N is an arbitrary number equal to a multiple of three. The armature-winding connecting line (63) connects in series the adjoining armature windings in such a way as not to substantially straddle a relatively great part of the outer periphery of any of the adjoining armature windings.
