A process for the preparation of a quaternary ammonium chloride having the general formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 8 -C 22 aliphatic group, R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1 -C 22 aliphatic group, and a is 0 or 1, comprises continuously reacting an amine of the formula with methyl chloride and (2-a) moles of an alkali metal hydroxide per mol of amine at a temperature of from 50 to 90‹ C. in a reaction medium comprising the final product and a low boiling alcohol whilst maintaining a methyl chloride partial pressure of from 3 to 10 atmospheres gauge. The amines used in the examples are distearylamine, di(tallow fatty acid) amine, di- (coconut oil) amine, primary soybean oil amine and a #-branched pentadecylamine.</p> |
