A renewable energy source such as solar or wind power is used to generate electricity for a heating element (1) which is used to heat a material (3) with a very high specific heat value (e.g. paraffin) to the maximum temperature possible. The material is heated inside a closed vessel (2) located in a boiler (4) so that thermal energy transfer between the vessel and boiler is possible. The boiler is used to provide hot water for a central heating system.
