A lockstitch sewing machine is disclosed having a mechanism whereby overedge stitches may be formed in the work fabric being sewn. A thread guiding insert accommodated in the lockstitch loop taker bobbin case directs each needle thread loop through an apertured throat plate and about the edge of a fabric being stitched for penetration of the thread loop by the sewing machine needle on a subsequent needle reciprocation.
