Shaped articles are produced by (a) introducing a mineral acid waste sludge, which contains >=5% wt. hydrocarbons, and is obtained from the reaction of a mineral acid and aromatic and/or unsatd. hydrocarbons, (b) combining a sufficient amount of a finely divided carbon material, which is almost free of moisture, such as petroleum coke, acid coke, wood charcoal, bituminous coal, lignite, carbon black and/or carbonised vegetable materials, having a particle size of =0.35 mm, with the acid waste sludge in a wt. ratio of 5:1 to 1:5, and (d) converting the mixt. into shaped articles pref. by extrusion or moulding, or by mixing the mixt. with a tumbling motion to give non-adhering granules. The product is dried at 80-315 degrees C, and sintered at 315-815 degrees C. The sintered article is activated by contacting with a mild oxidising gas at >=815 degrees C.
|
