PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for inputting characters to a mobile terminal are provided to increase users' convenience in inputting characters to a mobile terminal available for a wireless payment service through an external keyboard having a wireless transmission module. CONSTITUTION: An external keyboard(1) includes an IRDA transmission module(3) or an RF transmission module as a transmission module for wirelessly transmitting key data to a mobile terminal(2). The mobile terminal(2) includes an IRDA(4) or a near RF antenna as a receiving unit for receiving the key data, and a processor unit for processing the received key data to recognize characters which have been inputted through the keyboard(1). The processor unit controls an overall operation of the mobile terminal(2). When characters are inputted through the external keyboard(1), corresponding key data is received by the receiving unit of the mobile terminal(2) through the transmission module. And then, the key data is inputted to and processed in the processor unit, and then is displayed on a screen of the mobile terminal(2).
