A process for producing a methyl-substituted aromatic compound represented by the general formula (2): (X)a-Ar-(CH3) b [wherein X represents a substituent, e.g., OH, halogeno, or alkyl; a is 1 to 5; b is 1 to 3; and Ar represents an aromatic residue, provided that when a is 2 or larger, then any two adjacent groups each represented by X may be bonded to each other to form a ring], which comprises subjecting an aromatic compound represented by the general formula (1): (X)a-Ar-(Y)b [wherein X, Ar, a, and b are the same as defined above; and Y represents hydroxymethyl, (C1-18 alkyl)oxycarbonyl, mono- or di(C1-18 alkyl)acetal, or formyl] to catalytic hydrogenolysis in the presence of a zinc catalyst.
