Electrolyte past contains fluor or starch, tragacanth guar or carrgenate gum or opt. methyl cellulose. Electrolye is pref. zinc and ammonium chlorides in proportion 1:4, and contains slightly more than two-thirds water. Paste is stiff, gels before it expands and retains sufficient water prevent polarisation and permit passage of ions.
