1,133,041. Moulding fibre-resin strips. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 25 Feb., 1966 [25 Feb., 1965], No. 8507/66. Heading B5A. In a process in which a fibre-resin strip and a carrier strip of e.g. metal are drawn through a heated forming passage and the used fibreresin strip thus formed separated from the carrier strip, the edges of the carrier strip, which is wider than the forming passage, run in slots located in each side wall of the forming passage. In this way wear upon the material shaping surfaces of the forming passage by the edges of the carrier strip is obviated and a clean edged strip is produced. In the described embodiment a central carrier strip 12 sandwiched between outer fibre-resin strips 10a ,10b is pulled through a heated die by a suitable caterpillar puller mechanism, the fibre-resin strips being separated from the carrier strip after passage through the puller mechanism. The die comprises top and bottom parts 6a, 6b bolted together, the parts being separated by blocks 18 and shims 19 so as to form a passage having slots in its side walls. Shims 19 are replaceable so that strips of various thicknesses may be produced. A succession of carrier strips may be used the leading end of each strip overlapping the trailing end of the one before which is of reduced width so that only one thickness of strip passes through the slots with the forming passage (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). Alternatively a long single strip may be used the end of which is of reduced width. |
