A coloured glass composition comprises, in mole per cent, SiO 2 , 50-94; Al 2 O 3 , 0À5-30; Cu 2 O with or without CuO, 1À5-35; the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents. Also present may be AlF 3 , 0-6; TiO 2 , 0-11; B 2 0 3 , 0-12À5; NiO, 0-2.5; Fe 2 O 3 , 0-6; CoO, 0-6. The coefficient of thermal expansion (0-300‹ C.) may be # 10 Î 10<SP>-7</SP> per ‹ C. The composition may be used to form articles, e.g. astronomical mirrors; or as solderglass for bonding quartz e.g. to quartz, the sealing being accomplished by known techniques, particularly including sealing under pressure in a furnace with an atmosphere of N 2 .
