An ultrasonic whistle or other source of high frequency turbulence is applie d to a combustible mixture of gases (including air) in order to suppress the generation of NOx. This can be applied to an internal combustion engine with a special spark plug having a hollow central electrode through which air under pressure can pass, thus gaining access to a small orifice, sized to produce the required frequency, and located adjacent the location of the spark.
