PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion joint simple in construction, easy to construct, capable of accurately absorbing fluctuation and highly profitable by adopting a holder of a divided joint type with a slope on the reverse for tilting a cover material. SOLUTION: The expansion joint comprises the cover material 4 mounted tiltingly to a pivotally supporting member 5 provided on one body 2 via a holder 6 for covering a gap between the body 2 and a body 3 facing each other at the gap S. The holder 6 is divided into a first holder 6a on the pivotal side and a second holder 6b on the opposite side which can be integrated by the engagement with a joint member 7 provided on a divided portion. On the reverse of the second holder 6b, the slope 8 is provided which is higher at its center side. An actuator 9 supported on the other body 3 is put in linear contact with the slope 8 so that a spring member 10 engages with the first holder 6a for energizing the cover material 4 to be tilted toward the sides of the body 2 and the body 3.
