<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bumper device capable of effectively mitigating and absorbing an impact in a collision. <P>SOLUTION: The bumper device 14 comprises a bumper 16 which can be increased in width in the vertical direction of a vehicle, and a collision prediction means to predict the collision with an obstacle. The bumper 16 having an airbag 26 inside is preferable. The airbag 26 is inflated by an inflator 28. In this configuration, the collision prediction means inflates the airbag 26 by operating the inflator 28 based on the collision prediction with an obstacle, and increases the width of the bumper 16 in the vertical direction of the vehicle. The contact area with the obstacle in the collision is increased thereby, energy absorption is increased, and a cushioning effect is enhanced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
