Alkali metal tetrachloroferrates - for deacon chlorine process,from hydrated ferric chloride and alkali metal chloride

Alkali metal tetrachloroferrate of formula XFeCl4 (in which x is an alkali metal cation) is produced by heating a mixt. of a FeCl3 hydrate or aq. soln. with XCl and removing the H2O formed. Prod. can be used for the mfr. of Cl2 by the Deacon process and has the advantage of using readily available FeCl3 hydrate, instead of the anhyd. material. X can be Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs. whilst the mixt. is heated up to 310 degrees C pref. in the presence of HCl.
