PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize a color balance between respective colors in a color image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The patches for density detection of different colors successively formed on a photoreceptor drum 17 are successively transferred and overlapped on an intermediate transfer belt 30. The patches are transferred and fixed and colors are mixed on the intermediate transfer belt 30 by optimized control different from normal image forming by a transfer-fixing device 54. The color information of the patches which are fixed and whose colors are mixed is detected by a density detection sensor. Image density control parameter, for instance, laser power in an exposure device, potential by electrification on the surface of the photoreceptor drum 17 and the developing bias potential of a developing device 20 or the like are controlled based on a detected result.
