A protective garment has a fluorescent inner padding layer inside a conventional jacket or other item for normal wear. In hazard conditions the garment is turned inside out and worn with the full protection of the fluorescent effect. The effect is enhanced by reflective stripes sewn onto the inner padding which is secured to the outer garment by conventional fasteners, e.g. sliding clasp fasteners, press studs, press tapes etc. The outer layer can be made of a breathing fabric of selected colour.
