PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with variable valve opening characteristics, capable of reducing torque differences among cylinders while preventing emissions from worsening.

SOLUTION: The controller for the multi-cylinder internal combustion engine 1 is provided which has a valve opening characteristic control means 9 to control the valve opening characteristics of at least either an intake valve 2 or an exhaust valve 3 and which estimates differences in the amount of intake among the cylinders to restrict the control range of the valve opening characteristic according to the estimated differences in the amount of intake.
