PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for generating an arbitrary waveform for which a capability of an automatic experimentation device can be effectively utilized. SOLUTION: The arbitrary waveform generating method of the present invention includes the steps of applying sigma-delta modulation to an input signal defining a desired waveform by sigma-delta modulator, and applying pulse width modulation to the output of the sigma-delta modulator by a pulse width modulator. A minimum pulse width is established during the pulse width modulation. Thus, with this method, a high timing resolution for a bit rate of the automatic experimentation device for high frequencies can be utilized without increasing the number of transits. The minimum pulse width is introduced during pulse width modulation, thereby decreasing data-dependent jitter.
