PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital VTR capable of Just precision editing for the writing operation of a video and audio signal from a non-linear editing system to a recorder. SOLUTION: The video and audio recorder includes interface means for inputting digital data from an external unit, means for delaying the data by a predetermined delay amount between means for performing recording build up of the data, and means for judging a progressive state of the data during inputting after receiving a command indicating a start of recording by a method for controlling from an external unit via the interface means, judging a time delay until the VTR starts a recording operation, and adjusting the amount of the delay.
