PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an optical semiconductor device highly integrated and have many functions, and to make an optical semiconductor element able to operate for a long period normally and stably. SOLUTION: A package for housing the optical semiconductor element is provided with a metal base body 1 where a rectangular through hole which penetrates between upper and lower main faces is formed; an input and output terminal 5 which consists of a dielectric where a line conductor 5c at one end is connected with an external electric circuit to be a connection part, and a mounting part of the optical semiconductor element 2 is provided at the other end, and which is fitted and joined to the through hole 1a; and a metal lid 3 where a translucent member 4 is stuck to the surrounding of the opening of a through hole 3b and connected to the outer periphery of the upper main face of the base body 1. In the input and output terminal 5, a site on a side upper than a joining part with the through hole 1a is made to be a narrow width 5b-2 where a width in the direction of a long edge of the through hole 1a is shorter than the long edge of the through hole 1a, and a level difference is formed between the narrow width 5b-2 and the joining part.
