<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup which has improved light reception efficiency and is made extremely thin by controlling the position of a monitor photodetector. <P>SOLUTION: The thin optical pickup is equipped with a light source which emits light onto an optical disc and an optical bench on which the light source is mounted. The optical bench is provided with a slope tilted at a predetermined angle on an optical path in front of the light source and a monitor photodetector which receives the light emitted from the light source on the plane and monitors the amount of light.
