PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dimethylolalkanoic acid having excellent fluidity with slight fine powder and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: A 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanoic acid has≤20 wt.% ratio of particles having <300μm and has the peak of the particle diameter distribution within the range of 300-600μm. The method for producing the 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanoic acid comprises adding a crystal of the 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanoic acid when the 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanoic acid is crystallized from a solution of the 2,2'-bis(hydroxymethyl)alkanoic acid.
