The item of domestic equipment such as a washing machine has a front panel having manual inputs [14] and a display [15]. Within the machine is a control unit [20] coupled to a micro processor [19]. The microprocessor is programmed to respond to generate acoustic outputs to a loudspeaker [22] that relate to the operating functions of the machine.
