The present invention relates to an air compressor of which the operation is stopped if the inner pressure of an air tank (60) exceeds a predetermined value and then is started again if the inner pressure drops below the predetermined value. A crankshaft (20) of the air compressor is mounted movably in a fore and aft direction within a crankcase (20) attached to an engine. A clutch (40) for moving the crankshaft (20) is installed between a driving gear (30) receiving the power from the engine and a front end portion of the crankshaft (20). A pump piston (14) mounted within a pump chamber (13) of the crankcase (20) can reciprocate by a connecting rod (15) of which one end is connected to the crankshaft (20) and the other end is connected to the pump piston (14). A rear end of the crank chamber (13) is provide with an air cylinder (50) operated by means of a signal pressure introduced into the air cylinder (50) to move the crankshaft (20) in the fore direction.
