<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Raman amplifier which can be downsized and with which a gain band can be broadened. <P>SOLUTION: Narrow-band pulse light outputted from a light source 12 is amplified with an optical amplifier 13 and is inputted to an optical fiber 14 for SC. When the pulse light is inputted to the optical fiber 14 for SC, broad-band supercontinuum light is generated at the optical fiber 14 for SC. The broad-band light, of which the spectrum is adjusted with an optical filter 15, is supplied to an optical fiber 11 for Raman amplification via an optical circulator 16 as exciting light for Raman amplification. Signal light inputted to an input terminal 1a is inputted to the optical fiber 11 for Raman amplification and Raman amplified at the optical fiber 11 for Raman amplification.
