PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of restraining generation of gas caused by an auxiliary reaction. SOLUTION: The negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is composed of silicon and/or silicon-containing alloy, and at least a part of the surface of the negative electrode material contains fluorine.
